Getting started
What is Kali Silat Evolution (KSE)?
Kali Silat Evolution is a modern martial art and international community built around personal development. It combines Filipino Kali, Pencak Silat and Muay Boran into one system for empty-hand and weapon-based combat — for self-defense and competitive fighting alike. KSE was created by Dakilang Guro Jeff Espinous, who renamed his system Kali Sikaran to Kali Silat Evolution in 2016.
Do I need martial arts experience to start?
No. Complete beginners start with the Phase 1 curriculum, and people with experience in other styles are welcome too. Many KSE events — such as the January Seminar with its separate Foundations and Advanced tracks — are explicitly open to newcomers.
How do I start training?
Find a KSE school near you on the schools page, then send a trial class request through this website. Your request goes directly to the school you selected, and the school will contact you to arrange your first session.
What does training cost?
KSE schools are run locally — often as part of sports clubs — so fees and membership terms are set by each school. Ask your school directly; they will tell you about trial classes, fees and contracts.
Who founded KSE?
Dakilang Guro Jeff Espinous (1963–2026). He trained at the Inosanto Academy in Los Angeles from 1985 to 1989, founded Kali Sikaran in 1992 and renamed his system Kali Silat Evolution in 2016. Today KSE is carried forward by Kali Silat International.
Training & grading
What should I bring to my first class?
Comfortable sportswear and something to drink is usually enough. Ask your school whether training sticks or other equipment are provided for your first sessions.
Is KSE suitable for self-defense?
Yes. KSE trains empty hands and weapons — sticks, knife, sword and dagger — and includes Urban Self Defence. Its sub-styles cover every range from kicking distance through boxing (Panantukan) and trapping (Kadena de Mano) to grappling (Dumog). Sparring Games test the material step by step under increasing pressure, up to free sparring with protective equipment.
How does grading work in KSE?
KSE has 14 grades: six student phases (Phase 1–6), four instructor grades (Kadua Guro to Katalungan Guro, 1st–4th Dan) and four master grades (Guro to Punong Guro, 5th–8th Dan). Each grade requires a minimum training period and, from Phase 3 on, regular attendance of KSE seminars, workshops or camps. All gradings require continuous KSE membership.
Schools & membership
There is no KSE school near me – what can I do?
Contact us. We can point you to the nearest group or to seminars in your region, and if you are an experienced martial artist you can also ask about starting a new KSE group.
Events
Can I join KSE events as a non-member?
Many seminars are open to everyone — each event page says who it is for. Some events have entry requirements; the KSE Instructor Camp, for example, requires at least Phase 5.
